A new update has arrived for the Huawei Watch D2. This release adds a blood pressure-related tool, alongside improvements for the smartwatch’s heart rate app. Plus, there is a new watch face centred around health metrics and the wearable’s health check functionality.

Huawei is rolling out a new global update for the Watch D2 smartwatch. Software version 6.0.0.12 (C00M06) is bringing several new features to users of the original version of this wearable, so it matches the recently released Watch D2 Blue Edition (curr. €349 at Amazon DE).

The release notes for software version 6.0.0.12, as reported by Huaweiblog.de, state that all Watch D2 users can now get a reminder to take a one-off blood pressure measurement. You will receive the alert at your chosen time, with the company suggesting that it will help users to establish a routine. There is another improvement linked to the heart rate app; here, you can now view heart rate variability (HRV) data, as well as a log of historical workout and recovery heart rate data. There are also said to be optimizations to the user interface.

In the change log, Huawei indicates that there is a new HealthMate watch face. This option provides your latest health metrics, as well as a shortcut to start a new health check to collect new data. On top of this, there are said to be general improvements to system stability. Software version 6.0.0.12 appears to be rolling out to users of the Huawei Watch D2 in phases. When it is available, you will be able to download it via the Huawei Health app.

Infostealer malware keeps popping up in the news these days. Those headlines about millions of compromised passwords, some linked to major services like Gmail? Just a year or so ago, such big info dumps were largely full of less critical data—weak or recycled passwords for sites not central to your digital life.

But when an infostealer lurks on a PC, it can capture a lot of sensitive data, including login information for banking, email, and cryptocurrency accounts. Victims often don’t know until their account shows signs of odd or fraudulent activity because infostealers perform their advertised function to avoid detection.

So, how do you avoid this kind of malware? Use reliable apps and browser extensions, ones that have good reputations in addition to many downloads. Many are free (or very affordable), and some don’t even require an install. Just point your browser at a website, and off you go.

For example, here are a few trustworthy alternatives to popular apps like Photoshop and Acrobat—and a couple of better choices for a popular type of browser extension.

Photopea (Adobe Photoshop) — Unless you’re a heavy power user, this web-based image editor is plenty robust in its own right. You can use an ad-based version for free, while ad removal and AI features cost $5 per month. (Read about our hands-on experience with Photopea.)

PDF Candy (Adobe Acrobat DC) — This web-based PDF editor offers an advanced feature set and is free for use, though with a heavy limitation of just one task per hour. For unlimited access, you can pay $6 per month or $48 per year as a subscription, or a flat rate of $99 for a lifetime license. (Read our review of PDF Candy.)

OnlyOffice (Microsoft Office 365) — This document editing suite is a sleeker, more familiar-feeling alternative to Microsoft Office apps compared to the better-known LibreOffice. Apps are available for PC and on mobile. (Read our overview of OnlyOffice.)

uBlock Origin Lite — If you’re looking for a good ad-blocking extension, this long-time extension has weathered both the years and Chrome’s move to Manifest V3. Want another option to consider? My colleague Michael Crider swears by AdGuard.

Michael Ansaldo/Foundry

(If you’re most interested in image editing, I recommend trying sites like Canva and Adobe Express as well. Their free versions can handle simple projects, while making them easier to complete—the tools heavily reduce the labor of manual tasks.)

Want more good free software suggestions? You can check out a few of PCWorld’s round-ups of free software recommendations, like the best free software for your PC, free Photoshop alternatives that actually work, best free PDF editors, the best free password managers, and Chrome extensions we always install.

Besides choosing known, trusted alternative apps and extensions, another smart move is to keep your PC and browser streamlined. Think of it this way: The fewer chunks of code you install on your PC, the less you have to monitor or worry about.

Steven Slate Audio has unveiled the VSX Immersion One planar magnetic open-back headphones. When coupled with the company’s virtual speaker modeling software, the headphones can simulate a variety of environments for accurate music mastering.

Steven Slate Audio has announced the VSX Immersion One planar magnetic open-back headphones for music mastering and production. The headphones are available for pre-order at an MSRP of $899 with shipping starting in December 2025.

When coupled with virtualization software, the headphones can simulate the audio reproduction of music played in professional studios and speaker placement by leveraging binaural psychoacoustic technology.

This allows music producers to accurately master tracks without the need to rent actual studio time, according to the company. The software is also designed to emulate other common playback situations, such cars and smartphones.

The VSX Immersion One utilizes a one micron thick Sendy Audio planar diaphragm measuring 97 x 76 mm (3.8 x 3.0 in.) with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz. The aluminum body headphones are highlighted by maple wood earcups. A 2.5 m (8.2 ft.) balanced Y-cable connects the 32 ohm impedance headphones to 3.5 mm (1/8-inch) or 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) audio sources.

Readers who simply want to enjoy high-resolution music playback on planar headphones might consider a pair of Audeze LCD-X available on Amazon.

OpenAI wants your next security researcher to be a bot – and has launched Aardvark, its very own agentic security researcher, powered by ChatGPT.

Now in private beta, the company describes Aardvark as a “breakthrough” in AI and security research – an autonomous agent which helps developers and security teams discover and fix security flaws “at scale”.

“Each year, tens of thousands of new vulnerabilities are discovered across enterprise and open-source codebases,” the company said. “Defenders face the daunting tasks of finding and patching vulnerabilities before their adversaries do.”

In benchmark testing on so-called “golden” repositories (those that contain well-documented vulnerabilities and are used for testing), Aardvark has apparently had a 92% success rate.

Detailing how it works, OpenAI said Aardvark is not unlike a human – but without the need to rest, eat, use the toilet, or an occasional emotional breakdown.

“Aardvark looks for bugs as a human security researcher might: by reading code, analyzing it, writing and running tests, using tools, and more,” it said. By continuously analyzing source code repositories, it can identify vulnerabilities, assess exploitability, prioritize severity, and then propose targeted patches.

While the company stresses the tool is still in beta, it also says it’s already showing commendable results. OpenAI has been running it internally “for several months” across its codebases and those of “external alpha partners”, and managed to surface “meaningful vulnerabilities” which contributed to OpenAI’s defensive posture.

The Logitech MX Master 4 is a well-designed, ergonomic office mouse with innovative features that can make everyday work much easier for professional users. Its quick setup, long battery life, and high-quality construction make it a durable product.

Minor issues such as the lack of a charging cable and the unfinished software are minor weaknesses, but they hardly detract from the overall picture. With a price tag of around $120, the MX Master 4 is primarily aimed at users who value comfort, precision, and productivity and are willing to invest a little more to achieve this.

A clear recommendation for power users who spend a lot of time at the computer and want to optimize their workflows.

The Logitech MX Master 4 is one of the most sought-after productivity mice on the market and is set to continue the success of its predecessors. It promises maximum ergonomics, precise control, and innovative features such as haptic feedback and the Action Ring, which are designed to significantly optimize workflow. The MX Master 4 is designed especially for professionals who spend long hours working at the computer. We reviewed it.

The Logitech MX Master 4 features high-quality materials: the housing is largely made of recycled plastic, while the thumb wheel and main scroll wheel are crafted from robust aluminum.

The non-slip surface has been significantly improved compared to the previous generation, as Logitech has dispensed with the previously much-criticized rubber coating and now uses a more durable coating that is easier to clean. At around 150 grams, the mouse is comparatively heavy, which increases precision when controlling it, but can be annoying for mobile gamers.

The sensor operates at up to 8,000 DPI and can be used reliably even on glass surfaces. Screws for disassembly and possible repair are easily accessible, and Logitech plans to offer replacement batteries, which supports the sustainable use concept.

Setting up the MX Master 4 is quick and easy. The mouse can be connected either via Bluetooth or the included Logi Bolt USB-C receiver, which provides a stable, secure wireless connection with a range of several meters. Users can pair up to three devices and switch between them effortlessly using a button on the bottom of the mouse.

The basic connection is established within seconds, so the mouse is ready to use immediately. To enjoy the full range of features, we recommend installing the free Logi Options+ software, which can be used to configure the Action Ring in particular. The circular menu on this ring allows quick access to up to eight programmable shortcuts, which make navigating and working in complex applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Zoom, or Office noticeably easier. The software design is currently still in the beta phase, but has already proven to be very reliable during the review.

The Logitech MX Master 4 is compatible with all common operating systems such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and ChromeOS.

With its haptic feedback, the Logitech MX Master 4 offers a feature that has previously been seen mainly in smartphones and high-end trackpads. A vibration motor beneath the thumb rest provides noticeable feedback during certain actions, such as navigating to the edge of the screen, switching between applications, or activating the new Action Ring. The intensity of the vibration can be individually adjusted in four levels or completely deactivated.

In practical testing, the haptic feedback proves to be pleasant and valuable: it makes workflows tangible, signals when limits are reached when moving elements, and facilitates orientation when multitasking. Especially in combination with the Action Ring, the circular shortcut overlay, the feature gains even more value, which should significantly reduce repetitive movements. However, the feedback is limited to the thumb area and only works optimally with supported applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Premiere Pro.

All in all, the haptic feedback of the MX Master 4 is a well-thought-out innovation that can increase not only comfort but also productivity in the office and represents a unique selling point in the previously conservative market for office mice.

Logitech advertises the MX Master 4 with a battery life of up to 70 days with average use, a claim that may well be realistic in practice if haptic feedback is disabled. But even with intensive use, a month should easily be possible with one battery charge.

Fast charging via USB-C provides up to three hours of additional use after just one minute of charging, which meets professional requirements on stressful workdays. Another positive feature is the ability to continue using the mouse while it is charging, so there are no interruptions in your workflow.

The Logitech mouse is charged via a USB-C port on the front. If the battery does eventually die, it should be replaceable by the user.

Nikon’s compact full-frame camera with retro design gains new features with a major software update to version 3.00. The new firmware introduces the option to shoot photos with film grain in order to match the camera’s retro look.

The Nikon Z f currently retails for $1,996 on Amazon and has been on the market for over two years, but Nikon continues to provide software support for this rather unusual system camera. Specifically, the firmware update to version 3.00 is one of the camera’s biggest updates so far.

The firmware mainly introduces a film grain simulation, which adds clearly visible noise to photos that and is intended to resemble the look of analog images. Photographers can adjust the intensity of the film grain in six levels and its coarseness in three levels. The grain is simulated for each photo, so no two images will have the same grain patterns. This feature is also available in videos.

This photo was taken with the new film grain feature on the Nikon Z f

The update also adds a range of new settings. For example, it’s now possible to configure Focus Peaking so that the feature only highlights high-contrast edges in color when using the magnified view for manual focusing. New frame guides give users a preview of how an image would look if cropped to 4:3 or 9:16, which makes it easier to shoot in social media formats.

After the patch, the electronic viewfinder remains disabled as long as the display is folded out. This prevents the camera from accidentally switching between the display and EVF if the sensor is triggered by a camera strap, a finger or a piece of clothing. The firmware update to version 3.00 for the Nikon Z f is now available at Nikon’s download center.

TL;DR: The PC Transfer Kit gives you three apps to migrate software, preserve your PC, and fully delete files, and it’s only $35.

Moving to a new PC gets messy fast — reinstalling apps, restoring files, and redoing settings by hand. The PC Transfer Kit Bundle cuts the friction with three tools to migrate, back up, and securely wipe your data, and it’s $34.99 (reg. $129.85).

The first part of this bundle is a non-expiring license for PCmover Professional, an app that lets you move your applications, files, and user settings from an old PC to a new one. It works even if your old and new computers are running different versions of Windows. Most programs transfer over fully installed and ready to use, so you won’t need to dig up license keys or reinstall anything. If you need help, free transfer assistance is available around the clock.

The second tool is DiskImage, which creates a complete image of your computer, including all apps, data, and settings. That image can be restored later in case of system failure, data loss, or a virus. You can also restore it to a different computer if needed. DiskImage supports automated backups, so you don’t have to remember to do it manually.

SafeErase permanently deletes sensitive data from your hard drive. It uses government-recommended methods to make sure files are fully removed and can’t be recovered later. It’s useful for everyday privacy protection, but especially helpful if you’re planning to sell or recycle an old PC.

Right now, you can get the full PC Transfer Kit on sale for only $34.99.

After kicking off an unpopular pilot test last month, Samsung made the practice of having its expensive smart fridges display ads official this week.

The ads will be shown on Samsung’s 2024 Family Hub smart fridges. As of this writing, Samsung’s Family Hub fridges have MSRPs ranging from $1,899 to $3,499. The ads will arrive through a software update that Samsung will start issuing this month and display on the fridge’s integrated 21.5- or 32-inch (depending on the model) screen. The ads will show when the fridges are idle and display what Samsung calls Cover Screens.

As part of the Family Hub software update, we are piloting a new widget for select Cover Screens themes of Family Hub refrigerators. The widget will display useful day-to-day information such as news, calendar and weather forecasts, along with curated advertisements.

Samsung also said that its fridges will only show contextualized ads, instead of personalized ads, which rely on collecting data on users.

The Verge reported that the widget will appear as a rectangular box at the bottom of the screens. The box will change what it displays “every 10 seconds,” the publication said.

The software update will also introduce “a Daily Board theme that offers a new way to see useful information at a glance,” Samsung said. The Verge reported that this feature will also include ads, something that Samsung’s announcement neglected to state. The Daily Board theme will show five tiles with information such as appointments and the weather, and one with ads.

Google’s <ins>long-awaited AI health coach</ins> is nearly upon us, as a preview version is launching tomorrow for some Fitbit Premium users in the US. This will only be for Android devices at first, but the company promises an iOS version is in the works.

For the uninitiated, Google’s AI health coach is exactly what it sounds like. This is an AI chatbot intended to help users reach fitness and health goals. The company boasts that the tech is “secure, personalized and grounded in science.” Everything starts with a five to ten minute conversation with the coach to assess health and fitness goals.

The coach can be a sounding board for personal health, fitness and sleep goals, but also acts as a personal trainer. Google says it can be used to review and adjust fitness plans, check progress, get advice on trends and create workouts. To that last point, the company says the chatbot can create workouts based on pre-existing constraints. For instance, users can ask the bot to make a workout that can be done in a cramped hotel room.

The coach can also be used to brainstorm questions to ask a doctor and to track and analyze a number of sleep metrics. The bot provides a “detailed sleep analysis” and can allegedly understand patterns and trends that can impact sleep. All of this data can be accessed via the app.

Being as this is a preview build, it won’t roll out to everyone tomorrow. Eligible Fitbit Premium users will receive notification that the software is ready to use. It works with any Pixel Watch or Fitbit device.

The entire Fitbit app is being redesigned to focus more on AI and this is a large piece of the puzzle. Google promises integration with its health coach across every aspect of the app.
